Modern computers contain two types of "memory": fast, short-term memory known as RAM (Random Access Memory) used to store data during logic computations, and long-term storage such as a hard drive. This is a photo of RAM.

Computers are systems! (So what's a system?)

Learning objectives

key points

  • Electricity powers both "normal" electrical devices, such as ceiling fan or light bulb. Most household uses of electricty use a type called Alternating Current (AC) at 110V, which is dangerous to humans.
  • Electronic devices also use electricity, but a type called Direct Current (DC) at much lower voltages (3-5 volts) that is not harmful to humans. The current of this electricty can be used to carry data or control micro-switches inside electronic components.
  • Electronic devices involve the use of transistors which allow the device to carry out basic logic computations. The data for these computatiosn is transmitted in binary form in the form of tiny electrical pulses coded as on (1) or off (0).
  • Computers are multi-purpose electronic devices which can carry out instructions to accomplish a variety of unrelated tasks

System diagramming

In the space below, create your final draft of a non-computer system found somewhere here at CCAC;s West hills campus. Remember, include the following components in a well-made system diagram:

Critique a diagram

Choose a non-computer diagram from CCAC's CIT-100 class. Review it for completeness. In the space below, list what the author of the digram did well and what the author should improve for a second draft of the diagram.
