Operating system comparison

  1. Adopt a laptop from the set of Technology Rediscovery laptops.
  2. Locate the spreadsheet sheet/tab that corresponds to your chosen laptop in the master hardware tracking spreadsheet
  3. Ensure that your laptop's batter is plugged in and the battery switch is locked. Connect your laptop to wall power.
  4. Turn on your system. Touch nothing on a first boot and see what happens. Most systems will offer you a boot menu with items like "Ubuntu" or "GRUB". Let it select the default item which usually occurs at the expiry of a timer set for 10 seconds or so.
  5. Attempt to log into the operating system using the supplied credentials. Our general approach is to print the master username and password on a label on the device's monitor frame, usually on the bottom left. If no login info exists on a label, look for a sticky note or tape. Read all labels.
  6. If you can successfully boot into an operating system, record OS-related specs on your system tracking tab.
  7. In the sad and dismal event that your computer does not boot properly or cannot load an OS, note this in your system's service log. In your entry, detail the steps taken to test the system and the results. Use as much detail as possible.
